Speckled Trout have the nickname of “yellowmouth” which comes from a yellow interior of a mouth, although only typically found on larger fish.
Speckled trout fishing is another way to enjoy the inshore fishing that Venice has to offer.
We start to catch them as early as March during low river years and catch them until late November. Some days are better than others for sure when it comes to trout fishing and certain conditions are needed to be successful. Live Bait is needed most days to get on a good trout bite, however, artificial can be just as affective on certain days and times of the year.
March-May are considered our big Speckled Trout fishing months.
This is when they are spawning and the big females feed heavily. However, it is not uncommon to catch 8+lb trout as late as July and August.
The preferred method to fish for trout in this area is live bait or artificial under a cork. Top water lures such as top dog or mirr-o-lure can be affective as well depending on water clarity and time of the year.
