February Fishing Report
February is HEATING UP in Venice
Hard to believe we’re already 1 month into the new year! To the ones who battled the freezing cold temps this month in Venice, Louisiana, their persistence definitely paid off. Our customers reeled in some giant Wahoo, multiple 170lb.+ Yellowfin Tuna, a massive 130 lb. Swordfish, some hard-fighting Blackfin Tuna, limits of Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, and even large-mouth Bass. This just goes to show how productive these Louisiana waters can be!
Inshore Species in the Venice Marshes
Redfish: Winter in Venice, Louisiana, means Redfish gather in the shallow marsh, back ponds, and dead-end canals. Cooler temperatures lead to clearer water, making for fast-paced, visual fishing with hard pulls, shallow water blowups, and excellent catch-and-release days. It's one of the best times to fish for Redfish in the Louisiana bayou. Use dead shrimp on the bottom, spinnerbaits, or soft plastics slowly retrieved.
Speckled Trout: February is a key transition month for the prized Speckled Trout! They often hold near deeper bayou bends and passes where they can quickly access the warmer waters of the Gulf of Mexico or stay protected in deeper marsh holes. Use live shrimp (if available), or soft plastic lures like "Cocahoe Minnows" on a 1/4 oz jig head.
Flounder: These flatfish are masters of camouflage and are typically found buried in soft mud and sand near structures like oyster beds, bayou mouths, and jetties in the Venice, LA area. Winter sees them more concentrated. Use live or dead shrimp fished right on the bottom, or small artificial jigs bounced along the floor.
Sheepshead: The "convict fish" is a winter staple in Venice, Louisiana! They congregate around hard structures like bridge pilings, jetties, and offshore platforms. They are tough fighters and offer delicious table fare. Use live or cracked shrimp, or fiddler crabs.
Black Drum: Often mistaken for their smaller cousins, the Black Drum are numerous in the deeper canals and near the oyster reefs of the Louisiana marsh in February. They fight hard and can reach impressive sizes. Use cracked crab or fresh cut bait.
Offshore Species in the Gulf of Mexico
Yellowfin Tuna: February is a legendary month for chasing monster Yellowfin Tuna out of Venice, LA. The colder, rougher weather often pushes the largest tuna closer to the deep-water rigs and seamounts of the Gulf of Mexico, creating incredible big-game opportunities. Use live bait (like Hardtails) slow-trolled, chunking with cut bait, or vertical jigging.
Wahoo: Known for their blistering speed and razor-sharp teeth, the Wahoo bite is world-class in February off the coast of Venice, Louisiana. They are often caught while high-speed trolling offshore structures and rips. Try high-speed trolling with lures like skirted ballyhoo or large plugs.
Swordfish: These incredible broadbills are fished both day and night in the deep Gulf of Mexico. February provides consistent action for these daytime swordfishing challenges, often around 1,500-2,000 feet of water. Use large squid or whole fish baits rigged to sink to the bottom.
