Inshore Species in the Venice Marshes

Redfish: As the shallow marsh waters begin to warm consistently, Redfish remain aggressive. They will continue to stage in the back ponds and dead-end canals, but will start to move more broadly, feeding hard before their spring patterns set in. Anglers can expect continued shallow-water blowups, aggressive strikes, and powerful runs from these marsh favorites.

Speckled Trout: March is a critical month for Speckled Trout. As temperatures rise, they'll move more actively from their protected deeper holes toward passes and points, staging near passes, current lines, and points as they begin moving toward their spring spawning cycle. This means prime opportunities for anglers targeting these prized fish near current and structure.

Flounder: These flatfish are becoming more active as water temperatures climb. They'll be found buried in soft mud and sand near structures like oyster beds and bayou mouths. Focus on slow-moving baits right on the bottom.

Sheepshead: The "convict fish" remains a reliable winter staple, congregating around hard, shallow structures like bridge pilings and jetties, offering great table fare and a challenging fight.

Black Drum: Large schools of Black Drum are numerous in the deeper canals and near oyster reefs. They are powerful fighters and are best targeted with fresh, cut bait or cracked crab.

Offshore Species in the Gulf of Mexico

Yellowfin Tuna: March fishing for Yellowfin Tuna in Venice remains exceptional, with giant fish still holding around deepwater rigs and seamounts throughout the Gulf. The big fish from the winter months are still present around the deep-water rigs and seamounts of the Gulf of Mexico, with improving weather windows making runs more consistent.
