September can produce some serious offshore opportunities.

Yellowfin Tuna remain one of the biggest draws to Venice, and the early fall transition is a great time to have a big tuna on the target list. Blackfin Tuna, Mahi-Mahi, Cobia, Wahoo, Red Snapper and other reef species can add plenty of variety to an offshore trip.

And with Greater Amberjack season opening September 1, another hard-fighting offshore target is officially on the table.

The fish may change from day to day. That's exactly why local knowledge matters.

Inshore: Redfish and Trout Keep the Marsh Busy

The Louisiana marsh doesn't slow down just because summer is winding down.

Redfish remain one of the most dependable targets around Venice, with fish using flats, grass, points, cuts and areas of moving water. Recent local reports have highlighted productive Redfish fishing in clearer water, particularly around flats and current lines.

Speckled Trout remain another major September target, with fish responding to tides, water movement and changing conditions throughout the marsh.

Flounder, Sheepshead and Tripletail can provide additional opportunities when conditions line up.

Yellowfin Tuna

Yellowfin are one of the primary reasons anglers travel to Venice, and September can produce some serious fish.

Our offshore captains monitor deep-water structure, bait activity and recent reports to determine where the tuna are feeding. Depending on conditions, the day's approach may involve live bait, chunking, trolling or other techniques.

If a trophy Yellowfin is on your bucket list, September is a month worth watching.

Blackfin Tuna

Blackfin Tuna provide plenty of action when the Yellowfin bite isn't the only game in town.

They're fast, aggressive and powerful for their size—and a great addition to a mixed-bag offshore trip.

Greater Amberjack

September 1 Means Game On

Greater Amberjack season opens September 1 under Louisiana's recreational regulations, making this one of the most notable additions to the September offshore lineup.

These fish don't give anything away. Amberjack are powerful, hard-fighting fish that can turn a routine drop into a serious battle.

Red Snapper

Red Snapper remain an important offshore target in September, subject to current season, federal/state regulations and the rules applicable to the charter vessel and fishing area.

Regulations can change, so our captains will always make sure the trip follows the current rules.

Mahi-Mahi

Mahi-Mahi remain a great September bonus fish when blue water, floating structure, weed lines or other productive water comes together.

They're colorful, aggressive and a favorite for anglers who enjoy fast action on lighter tackle.

Redfish

September is a great time to put a bull Redfish on the target list.

As water conditions change, Redfish can be found around marsh flats, grass, points, cuts and areas where moving water concentrates bait.

When the conditions are right, the marsh can produce the kind of drag-screaming fights Venice is known for.

Speckled Trout

Speckled Trout remain an important September inshore target. Captains pay close attention to tide, current and water clarity to locate feeding fish.

Fishing Venice isn't about following a calendar and assuming the fish will be in the same place every day.

Our captains watch several factors closely:

• Weather & Gulf Conditions: Offshore conditions can change quickly in September. A good weather window can make all the difference on a long offshore run.
• Mississippi River Stage: River flow influences salinity and water clarity throughout the delta, which can affect where inshore fish set up.
• Tides & Current: Moving water is critical for locating feeding fish in the marsh.
• Water Clarity: Clearer water can create better sight-fishing opportunities, particularly for Redfish.
• Bait Activity: When bait is present, predators usually aren't far away.
• Recent Reports: The most valuable information is what the fish were doing recently—not necessarily what they were doing two weeks ago.

It's one thing to catch a big fish. It's another thing to share the fight with your son.

Clint Westbrook & Crew — Inshore/Offshore Double-Header: Clint Westbrook and his crew took advantage of two very different sides of the Venice fishery. Day one took them offshore with Captain Bob Kenney, where the crew targeted a variety of Gulf species. Day two was a complete change of scenery as they headed into the Louisiana marsh with Captain Jordan Roque. That's one of the advantages of fishing Venice: one trip can put you in the deep Gulf chasing big pelagics, while the next morning you're working shallow marsh water for hard-fighting Redfish.

Billy Nichols & Crew — Offshore with Captain Bob Kenney: Billy Nichols and his crew headed offshore with Captain Bob Kenney and found a variety of Gulf species waiting. Mahi-Mahi, Red Snapper and Cobia made for a productive mixed bag and a full cooler at the end of the day.

Louis Petraglia & Crew — Offshore Action with Captain Bob: Louis Petraglia's crew headed offshore with Captain Bob Kenney and returned to the dock with an impressive variety of Gulf fish, including Mahi-Mahi, Yellowfin Tuna, Blackfin Tuna and Red Snapper. That's exactly the kind of multi-species opportunity that makes Venice such a unique offshore destination. [Watch the Louis Petraglia crew's offshore action.]

Amy Block & Crew — A Different Kind of Offshore Trip: Amy Block and her group had one specific request: they wanted to experience the best of the Gulf—but Yellowfin Tuna weren't on the list. Captain Bob adjusted the game plan and put the crew on Red Snapper, Cobia and Mangrove Snapper instead. The lesson? You don't always have to chase the biggest fish to have an incredible day.

The Pole Bowl — September 24–26

If you're going to be in Venice late September, there's another reason to spend some time around Cypress Cove Marina.

The Pole Bowl Cane Pole Fishing Tournament runs September 24–26 at Cypress Cove Marina.

And this isn't your typical offshore tournament.

The competition is cane poles only—no reels—and the tournament includes multiple divisions, food, live music, a shrimp boil and a Kids Cane Pole Classic.

The Kids Classic takes place Saturday, September 26, is free to enter and is open to young anglers 15 and under.
